Women’s Life Collective

The Coletivo Mulher Vida – Women’s Life Collective – was founded in 1991 by Cecy Prestrello and Marcia Dangremon to initially help women in situations of domestic violence.

Since then, the collective has branched out to help women, children and adolescents in at risk situations.

Over the years they’ve grown and now house four programs.  The first program was The Women’s Citizenship Project, which holds weekly meetings within the communities.  They teach women their rights and discuss any problems they may be having.  The women see that they are not alone.

Through this work, Cecy and Marcia saw that domestic violence was a vicious cycle that led children to the street, so they began to branch out.

They began their second program in 1992 – Live Adolescent Girl, which is basically structured the same as the women’s group, but caters to girls between the ages of 12 and 17.

The Nucleus of Information and Empowerment goes out onto the streets and invites girls who are possibly in situations of prostitution and close to the sex trafficking industry.  It gives these girls a free space where they can learn about the potential dangers of their situation and informs them about STDs.  It also publishes a magazine called Hummingbird, which they hand out near the beach to other at risk girls.

The Happy Child Project began in 1995 by taking kids who were working on the streets and giving them supplemental schooling.  They also offer the parents a basic food package once a month so they don’t resort to putting their kids on the street.
